Yep-that's me.
I will tell you I constantly think of things during the day of which to write about but once I actually have time to sit at the computer I am more interested in reading what others have to write than writing myself. Guess this proves I am not meant to be a writer ;)
But here's a general catch-up...
My Lydia continues to be a source of pride. She was selected for the Junior National Honor Society- which unlike HS Honor Society includes a community service aspect. I was so excited when we received the notice in the mail. I am also proud of her new-found drive to craft. She decided on Wednesday that she would knit a scarf for a friend whose birthday was Saturday. Now for long-time knitters (or even new but confident knitters) this deadline isn't too short. But when you are 13 and have school and play practice and Halloween and other general teenagery stuff to do, that is a steep dealine! But she did it and her friend loved it and now she's making scarves for more of her friends.
Luke scored his first goal in soccer last week!
I had a huge blow-up with hub and the words "Under 8 soccer is not the Olympics" was uttered by me and daggers were sent from hub's eyes when I called Lydia a "kiss ass". We're still working through that fight- though Lydia and I are good to go :)
Yesterday, I bought a beautiful skirt from Ecoquette which is a locally owned business. Buy one! They are truly beautiful. And they are a stylish way to show your green. And they come from India from a family and all the workers are paid a fair wage. Everyone wins! Buy one.
I'd show you a picture, but my camera is broken :( I am so upset. I will need to get it fixed ASAP. I will be too sad if I miss the holidays.
Take care.
VOTE on Tuesday.
Take your friends.
VOTE for change.
Go Obama!
I read several craft-type-blogs. The thing that sucks is that they sometimes get an idea and everyone and their mother thinks they need to promote that particular idea. Evidently a calendar by a certain artist has been announced and now it's been on pretty much every craft blog I sunscribe to. Enough already! I beseech thee oh craftbloggers- if you see it on two other blogs don't post it on your own. Otherwise people like me will get frustrated and post about its overexposure. Overexposure never works. Never.
Don't forget that October is breast cancer awareness month. Is your workplace having a Passionately Pink day? If not- maybe you could organize one.
I got my hair cut and colored last night. I love it. Pics soon.
I am loving the new TV show Fringe. The best character is Dr. Walter Bishop. Actor John Noble does a fantastic job portraying this "mad" scientist of sorts. The X Files is one of my all time favorites and this show has the same feel without being a total rip-off. Speaking of rip-offs, I am worried that Heroes is taking too much from the now defunct 4400. I know The 4400 had low viewership but that doesn't give anyone the right to take direct storylines and incoroporate them into a different show. I'm sort of mad about that.
I had a trip to the library the other day and now I have two new books to try out. Let's hope they are winners.

Reading:
Last week I finished The Shack and
The Abstinence Teacher two very different books both about the role religion plays on our lives/communities. I liked them both but I'm not sure what to think about The Shack. While I found the "characters" of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit original (for a book I purchased at a Christian bookstore!), I was left wondering just what I was supposed to get out of it. I definitely am not angry after reading it like some customers at the store where I bought it. I found it to be an interesting look at one man's struggle to come to terms with his daughter's disappearance. I didn't really disagree with the characterization of God or Jesus and the characterization of the Holy Spirit was a pleasant surprise. I just wasn't sure what I was supposed to take from it. Any insight? As for The Abstinence Teacher, I was interested because A) I'm a teacher and concerned with teachers being confronted by a community and B) I really enjoyed Tom Perrota's Little Children and Election. This was a good book but not as good as his others. I enjoyed the characters but felt like the ending left me wanting more. It's a quick read, but maybe too quick.

Watching:
I Want to Work for Diddy- I LOVE Laverne and think she should win! She's smarter and more put together than all of the other contestants. I will admit to enjoying Boris. He always seems to pull it out when you think he will be of no help whatsoever.
The Cho Show- I've always found Margaret to be hilarious and her show is too. The beauty contest ep was great. "We're ALL Winners!"
Project Runway- All hail Tim Gunn! He is the coolest guy on TV. I'm not sure who I like best yet...there are a few but Blayne and Suede are sort of wearing thin.

I've taken up knitting again. But I'm wondering if I should be! I frog more than I keep. Here's a pic of Luke with Otto and his babushka. This is about the extent of my knitting success lately.

* The Staycation
Experts say it's not uncommon for overscheduled families to choose a "staycation," a term whose origin is often attributed to a popular Canadian television series. In 2006, a New York magazine further promoted the "staycation," encouraging people to spend their vacation exploring what the city has to offer instead of leaving town.
Ummm...as a child growing up in a lower middle class/upper lower class family we always had staycations! Nothing new there. We were doing it 30 years ago. Our staycations involved visits to places like Crystal Cave, Roadside America, and Knoebel's. These are places I have now taken my own children because as hub and I are both teachers we have the time but not the cash for larger vacations. I have fond memories of getting in the lime-green metallic station wagon we owned and driving a bit to see these interesting sites. My sister and I would read books (and probably argue though I don't remember that!) on the short drives to these local gems. We didn't go on a "real" vacation to the Jersey shore until I was in seventh grade. But I never felt like we were missing out. My parents did a great job of making us feel rich even though we weren't. I know that now as I look back on my childhood. It was good. Really good. And I want the same memories for my own children. I hope they appreciate whatever vacations we can give them...even if it's just a "staycation".
* Breaking Dawn
I finished a few days ago. I really liked it. I liked it as much as the first in the series. She is a fine storyteller even if the editing could be a bit better. How does a bestseller like that get printed with missed or doubled words??? Here's a fun photocollage I found on a friend's MySpace. I don't know where it came from but I like how it included pictures from the new movie-- which BTW is coming out earlier than originally planned! I will definitely be there at the midnight showing with my Lydia and her friends. I admit it... I'm a Twilight Mom!
Well...today is my first inservice of the school year and so my extended staycation is over. Wish me luck for a good school year and enjoy your end of summer.
What's your Mafia name? Using Mim Smith I was given Lightning Fingers Rea but using my real name I was given the more fitting monkier of Morose Alice Tagliano.
Sometimes I could really use a machine like this. I have been know to break dishes on purpose before and perhaps this would be a more civilized way to do it.
I'd really like some of this art or something from Elsita (who has a fantastic blog btw). Perhaps as a present to self once I'm finished with my classes.
