Lukulele Plays His Ukulele on the Island of Hawaii
When Luke was little, we used to sing a little ditty with those words to make him giggle.
I was reminded of that song today when I read this.
While I think it's a terribly silly name, I think it is wrong that a girl named Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii was removed from custody from her parents because they would not change her name. While the judge argues he is tired of parents choosing silly names for their children, there is no reason that a child should be removed from her family. The article states that the 9yo girl does not like her name and refers to herself as K. That's fine. Some kids don't like their names. Let her change her name when she gets older.
Both my kids have pretty normal names- Lydia and Luke. As a teacher, I wanted something different but not strange. Having a very common name for my generation (Melissa) I didn't want my children to be one of six with the same name in a grade level. But it is a parent's right to name a child and this judge has overstepped boundaries.
What say you?

I think the judge over stepped his boundaries. All names have an origin and where would you be if way back when Melissa was declared too 'out there'? American Indians have always had names that weren't European main stream, but 'Running with Wolves' is a perfectly acceptable name for an American Indian.
I once worked with an African American woman that named her baby girl China Doll. I still can't figure that one out, but...she's not my baby and it's not my choice.
If parent's aren't smart enough to think about the possible reactions of future school mates to an 'out there' name, then they deserve the weird looks and the reactions that they get. Unfortunately the child is the one that has to live with the parents stupidity until they are old enough to make a change on their own.
Maybe it is in the parents culture to name their child according to something (or someone) that made a big impact on them: Talula, who happens to live in Hawaii and does the hula is one of those people. I heard that Garth Brooks and his first wife named one of their girls Taylor Maine because that is where she was concieved. May Talula was concieved while the parents were on vacation in Hawaii learning the hula.
Silly name, but she should not have been taken from her parents simply because of name choice.
